Today I start series of posts devoted to wedding
traditions of different nations. The first one will be about Gypsies. Gypsy is
a nation that does not have motherland or country but somehow they saved
all features of nation living all around the world. However, they are partly
assimilated by surrounding so, for example, English Gypsies are very different from
Russian ones. They do not wear traditional costumes every day but they do for
celebrations and wedding is one of them.
Recently TLC channel made series of shows about
Gypsies of USA and England. It looks like wedding is the event in girl’s lives.
Basically it is the only one event in their lives. They do not graduate schools
and do not have proms, they do not get jobs. They get kids very early and devote
their lives to their families. Their wedding dresses are ridiculously big and
cost a fortune for their fathers. Bride in such dress would not get into
trailer she lives in. Her father will pay for it against sound sense so that
nobody would doubt he could afford it.
